Wow! Talk about a way to grab the readers’ attention and introduce a character! “The night Kate Harker decided to burn down the school chapel, she wasn’t angry or drunk. She was desperate.”

It seems like yesterday that I was lucky enough to stumble across Red Rising when ordering a different book on Amazon. I was not even half way through with Red Rising before I ordered Golden Son. I was anxiously waiting the publication of Morning Star to see how the story would end. Towards the end I was honestly upset knowing that my time with these characters would soon be at an end. When a book can make you feel so many emotions then almost a year after the last book came out you still cannot shut up about it, well then I feel extremely lucky that an author was able to share his/her gift with me.

Take everything you thought you knew about the Wizard of Oz and its characters and throw it out of the window immediately!! This is not the Oz we grew up with as children. At first you might think how can someone take a story that was and still is so fantastic, twist it and still make it something worth reading? Well Danielle Paige has found a way.
Let me start by saying that I am not always a fan of “Novellas.” However, for this series, the Novellas are an important way of understanding how Oz got to its current state of affairs. There are 9 Novellas in all, summarized in 3 books labeled Dorothy Must Die Stories Volume 1, 2 and 3. All 9 Novellas are set as prequels from where L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz ended and Dorothy Must Die begins. Each Novella is told from the point of view of a different character giving some much needed backstory. I have previously avoided Novellas for other series such as the I Am Number Four series but this is one set that I highly recommend taking the time to read. If you have not begun the series yet my recommendation would be to wait until March 14th when the last set of Novellas is released along with the final book in the series, The End of Oz.
