When Marie Lu, author of The Young Elites and the Legend trilogies, comes out with a new series that has a futuristic video game at the center of it, I knew there was no way I was passing on reading this book.

Warcross is the most popular video game of the future.  It is a virtual reality combat game played by the better majority of people in the world.  The Warcross championships are broadcast live and attracts a viewing audience that professional sports organizations could only dream of one day having.

Book number 2 in the Monsters of Verity duology, “Our Dark Duet” picks up not long after the events in “This Savage Song” took place.  Roughly 6 months have gone by and the world that Kate and August knew has been ripped apart.  

Kate now resides in a different city with monsters of its own.  She has teamed up with a rag-tag group of individuals who call themselves the "Wardens".  While each member of the group has his/her own special skills, Kate is the only one who hunts monsters each night.  The rest of the group reminds me of a bunch of Felicity Smokes from Arrow.  While the Wardens mean good, Kate is the only one making any kind of difference in her new home of Prosperity.
