If you like video games and you grew up in the 80s then stop right here, buy the book and read it. You will not need to read any further to find reasons you will enjoy this book. For those of you still here, stop, buy the book and read it! Hahaha
When people ask me to recommend books for them to read, there are three that top my list. Scythe by Neal Shusterman, the Red Rising Trilogy by Pierce Brown (check out my reviews of both by clicking on the their titles) and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. The funny part about it is, blind luck brought all three books to me. Scythe and Red Rising were random finds on Amazon. Ready Player One was suggested by an author via Twitter. I could not have gotten any luckier than to find these books as, for me, they are right up there with Ender’s Game.
Yes I grew up in the 1980s. Yes I am part nerd. Yes I love video games. Ever since I was able to form lines in Tetris and make a plumber jump across my screen I have been a gamer. Ready Player One will seriously test your gamer knowledge as it references many titles that have long since been forgotten.
Set in the future, Oasis is a multiplayer online game used by virtually everyone in the world on a daily basis. Its creator is one of the most studied people in the world. Upon his death, James Halliday left behind a legacy and a contest that the world would participate in. Halliday leaves behind a film called “Anorak’s Invitation”. In this film a challenge is issued to everyone. Solve the riddles, find the clues, put all the pieces to the puzzle together and you can inherit Halliday’s fortune.
This is especially important because in this future world, Earth has become a pretty grim place to live. Wade Watts, our main character, lives in a mobile home with his aunt, her boyfriends and anyone else who rents a room from her. Yes, I know you are thinking we have that now. Well Wade’s mobile home is in what is known as a “stack”. That’s right, mobile homes thrown on top of each other into stacks. His escape from reality? Hiding in an abandoned van to virtually go to school, play Oasis and of course, try to find Halliday’s Easter Eggs and inherit his fortune.
Years have gone by since Halliday’s death and even the professional “gunters’ (egg hunters) have made zero progress with Halliday’s challenge. The scoreboard remains empty. That is until Parzival, Wade’s character who is named after Percival the Arthurian knight, famous for his quest for the Holy Grail, suddenly appears on top. Wade becomes the first person to start this quest the whole world is on and have any success.
If you are ready to have a “nerdgasm” then read the book! Join Parzival, Art3mis, Aech and others on a quest for the Holy Grail of their lifetime. A movie is said to be in the works for Ready Player One.
