I am pleased to introduce you to Janelle Gabay, the author of First Born, the first book in the First Born Books Trilogy and part of the Guardians of Dare Chronicles. You can learn more about Janelle on her website - http://www.janellegabaybooks.com/.
Q: While Tarian may be the most important character in the first book, who was your favorite to write? Who was the most difficult?
A: Since we’re talking about Book 1, First Born, I’ll say Delia was my favorite. She’s cunning and sly and I loved delving into that side of my personality because in real life I’m very upfront and honest. The hardest I guess was Eleanor, and I only say that because I needed her voice to be authoritative. She always had to be on point and sophisticated.
Q: Just saying the word Immortals brings to mind different variations of “gods”. When you set out with the series, what did you envision the Immortals were and would become?
A: In the very beginning, I saw them as soldiers in the Revolutionary War. The idea grew from a paper I helped my daughter write. The old wars seemed so brutal that I wondered how anyone could have survived. My brain envisioned immortals on the battlefield helping the mortals conquer their enemies. I never thought of my immortals as Gods. To me, they were ordinary people with extraordinary DNA. They were super humans. The more I created the story I wove fantastical elements into their characters, such as telekinesis and invisibility, and their magical Guardian Village. I saw them as Guardians, as the keepers of North America, hidden figures secretly leading America and keeping it safe.
Q: There are so many secrets that are kept by the Guardians of Dare. Easy to do when you have lived as long as some of them. Yet it seemed everything revealed itself as it needed to. Was there anything that you considered revealing in First Born that we will not see until a later book? Or perhaps something that was cut out and the story went in a different direction instead?
A: John Dee the English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, occult philosopher, and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I, discovered the immortals. None of that is mentioned in the books. You all are the first to hear this. I want to start the series during the sixteenth century on John Dee’s country estate when the Queen comes to visit him. Audrey, Zachary, and Joe are hiding from the Queen on his property as they’re trying to figure out why they don’t age or die.
Some more interesting facts:
I cut the first 132 pages, but it was all related to Tarian’s life living in Delia’s house before he goes to the Entente Military Academy. Also, the game inside the Realm originally took place at EMA. In Book 2, you learn more about Roman and why Joe hired him and the significance of his Xia heritage. So much is yet to come about Piper and the Lavender Witches
Q: Each Immortal has a gift or ability at their disposal. We are witness to some of these in First Born. How did you decide which character would have what gifts or abilities? How many have we not been privy to that we can expect to be surprised from in books 2 and 3?
A: Good question – Immortals with witch’s blood have gifts. How I decided whom to give gifts to was organic. Intuitively I gave Audrey the gift of temperature control and never realized just how useful this ability is and how many times she’d have to depend on it in the stories. In Book 2, you won’t find any new gifts. Instead, I’ve expanded on the gifts you already know about; but you will be introduced to many new creatures with unique abilities. Eleanor’s lab assistant Patrick, Tarian’s sister Teresa and Piper have much larger roles and expanded talents in First Awakened. Just make sure not to forget Gregory Lycott and his invisibility. Book 3 will cross the ocean in a race to save a little girl with very special gifts.
Q: First Awakened is the next book in the series and has been on sale since March 2017. What sneak peeks can you give readers into this book other than what is shown on your website?
A: In First Awakened, you meet more of the villagers. The magical village is falling apart. It has a walking dead element. The portals to South America are fun, and the places are intriguing. You will meet Xia Preta and more Lavender Witches. I enjoyed writing these characters, so I hope you love reading about them. Oh, I almost forgot, remember the Cavern System caused by the meteor showers. I hint to these caves a lot in First Born. In First Awakened you learn what’s hidden inside the great Cavern System, and why it’s important to the survival of the Guardians of Dare.
Thank you very much for your time Janelle! I very much look forward to reading First Awakened and whatever you have planned to finish this series!
