Let me start out by saying I am a big Jay Kristoff fan. The Illuminae files, co-written with Amie Kaufman, and the Nevernight series are utterly fantastic. Needless to say I had very high expectations for this book. Lifel1k3 starts out with a smash, progresses quickly and the twists just keep on coming. Then you have that ending which is just utter perfection in my opinion! I honestly cannot wait for the next installment because I am very curious to see where the story goes from here.
In Lifel1k3 you are presented with a post-apocalyptic world far in the future. I mean we are literally in the land where robots were created with the 3 Laws instilled and you have an honest to goodness I Robot flashback for a little while. Especially during that opening scene in the book in the WarDome. No, I will not go further into it to avoid spoilers but this book definitely starts out with a bang!
As far as back story goes, Mr. Kristoff does a great job of filling in the details of the main characters and the state of the world slowly. There are intersperses of a past event that one of the main characters cannot fully remember at the beginning of the story. This major event is filled in piecemeal and each time you get just a taste for it you are left wanting more. You want to know what happened on that fateful day and what events preceded it so badly. Trying to piece this puzzle together was part of what kept me going through this book so fast. The other part was that it was so damn enjoyable especially with the many twists and turns Mr. Kristoff throws in there.
Character-wise, your heart goes out for some of them. Just when you want to start hating someone or loving someone watch out! They might just turn out to be someone that is completely the opposite of what you thought they would be.
While not as adult themed as the Nevernight series and not yet as bloody as the Illuminae Files, you should know that not everyone you meet is going to survive this story. Whether they die in book 1, 2 or 3, you just know you are going to lose some characters along the way. Who makes it out alive to appear in future books? What twists has Mr. Kristoff found to keep on us our toes this time? Pick this up and be ready to have your heartstrings tugged and your mind blown!
