It seems like yesterday that I was lucky enough to stumble across Red Rising when ordering a different book on Amazon. I was not even half way through with Red Rising before I ordered Golden Son. I was anxiously waiting the publication of Morning Star to see how the story would end. Towards the end I was honestly upset knowing that my time with these characters would soon be at an end. When a book can make you feel so many emotions then almost a year after the last book came out you still cannot shut up about it, well then I feel extremely lucky that an author was able to share his/her gift with me.
Let us start from the beginning without giving too much away. These dystopian sci-fi novels are nearly perfect. Immediately you are drawn into the world of Darrow, a young red living on Mars working as a Helldiver to extract Helium-3. In this future world there is a caste system in place in the form of colors. Reds are the lowest on the totem pole while Golds rule above all other colors. Reds are forced to live in poverty. They are set-up on Mars to work in order to one day ensure the planet would be ready for all other colors to live. It is not until Darrow and his wife Eo venture into an area that is off limits does Darrow realize just how much the Golds have lied to Reds for so long.
While the main character in the trilogy is Darrow, his wife Eo is just as important despite the fact that she does not even make it half way through Red Rising. (Spoiler alert. Sorry, some cannot be avoided.) Darrow and Eo might be young but they are head over heels in love with each other. However, Eo’s eyes are open while Darrow’s remain closed. Eo views the world differently than Darrow. A simple conversation between husband and wife early on was something that to this day, 2 years after reading it, I remember as if I was reading it for the first time.
“I live for the dream that my children will be born free. That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.’
‘I live for you,’ I say sadly. (Darrow)
She kisses my cheek. ‘Then you must live for more.”
Darrow’s life is saved by a renegade group known as the “Sons of Ares”. He is convinced to join their cause. They wish to overthrow the Gold rulers. To do so however is no small feat. Can Darrow be transformed from a lowly Red to a mighty Gold? Can Darrow infiltrate Gold society and rise up the ranks without being discovered? Can those who believe they themselves are gods be reminded that they are merely mortal? I highly suggest you pick up a copy, hardcover of course, and start this series immediately. Do not wait for the movie to come out as we all know books are always better than the movies.
