Here we have a short novella, written by Martha Wells, taking us into a corporate-controlled future set in space. Told from the point-of-view of a ‘droid that calls itself “Murderbot”, this is a fast paced adventure with an interesting cast of characters.
To start off, Murderbot is a part organic, part synthetic ‘droid that is rented from The Company and referred to as a Sec-Unit. No one is aware that this Sec-Unit has found a way to hack its government controls. They are completely unaware that their Sec-Unit no longer has to follow the commands it is given but rather exercises free will. What does it do with that free will you ask? Well, it watches hundreds of hours of TV shows of course!
As things start to go wrong for the research team, questions start to arise and loyalties are called into question. As the research team learns Murderbot’s secret, they must determine if they can trust the Sec-Unit that was supplied for their protection. Just who, or what, is the cause for a series of actions meant to kill all members of the research party?
Overall, this is a fun science-fiction novella that has a great pace and fascinating characters. It will not take long to read but you will be glad you did once it is over.
