If you were once or still are a “geek”, “nerd”, “gamer”, etc., then this is one of two books by Ernest Cline that was made for you. See the Ready Player One review (Gamers Unite: Ready Player One) to learn more about the other book
Set in the present day, Zack “Zack Attack” Lightman (if you do not get the “Zack Attack” reference stop here), lost his father when he was too young to ever know him yet he has grown up idolizing him. As a high school student he has a very busy life revolving around school, his job at a video game store and yes you guessed it, playing video games. One video game he plays more than others and has become a top 10 player in the world at, Armada.
Zack is looking outside during a high school class one day when he sees a UFO. However this UFO is straight out of Armada which means it cannot possibly be real. Or can it? Zack’s entire world gets turned upside down for a second time in his short life. His father was on to something before he died and Zack is thrust into the middle of his father’s conspiracy theory. Could everything from the 1970s forward truly have been created to prepare us for a war against an alien race? Star Wars, Star Trek, Ender’s Game, Space Invaders, etc. As one of the best Armada players in the world, Zack is going to have to answer quite a few questions.
Ernest Cline has again delivered a wonderful sci-fi piece that can be binged through in a day. Well I am sure most people who have lives might not be able to get through it in a day but I am not one of those. I could not put this down. Interplanetary warfare, video games, government conspiracy and of course there is a romantic angle thrown in for good measure. Sometimes I find the romantic angles are too forced at times. Armada will provide a love interest that is a true badass you cannot help but want to see good things happen for. The secondary characters are easy to grow attached to as well.
In the end, just when you think you have seen it all, twists keep on coming to keep you on the edge of your seat. This is one you really want to have more of when you are through with it. There are currently no sequels mentioned as of yet. Bummer I know. For now you will have to settle for Armada, after Ready Player One of course.
