What happens when you attend a small school? Everyone knows everyone else’s business, that’s what. Imagine living in a town that spans roughly 5 miles and your entire life would be under a microscope. Personally I would escape the first chance that I got.
That is precisely what our main character has done. Abby Williams has moved on from her home town of Barrens, Indiana but somehow always felt a pull back towards home. Even as she makes a life for herself in Chicago, Barrens still calls out to her.
At the heart of it all is Abby’s childhood friend Kaycee. Kaycee also escaped Barrens. She ran away when she was a teenager. Or so everyone chose to believe. Why else would the most popular girl in school who seemingly had everyone under her thumb and the world at her fingertips run away though? Herein lies the beginning of the mystery in Bonfire.
Yes, Abby originally returns to Barrens to dig into a multi-million dollar company she is trying to prove is poisoning the water and ruining the lives of the citizens of Barrens. So now you have a backstory which never goes away and mystery in the present. Abby feels determined to solve both and she believes Kaycee is the key.
The mystery slowly unfolds as the story progresses. For someone who enjoys puzzles and tends to figure things out, I did not know the entire ending to the story before it got there. Was I able to put together part of the mystery? Yes I was. However, there was still enough of a twist at the end that I was unable to put together. As everything unfolded I was shocked and appalled that such things could occur but such is the world we live in. The more I thought about the ending the more I realized it might not be that farfetched of an idea. To me that is pretty scary.
Overall Bonfire was a success IMO. Is it something I would say go out and buy the minute it comes out in November of this year, no. However, I have done much worse at times in choosing my books. A quick read, this is something I would recommend to those who enjoy a good mystery or are in between series/books at the moment.
