Sad to say but we have officially come to the end of the Road of Yellow Brick and must say goodbye to friends new and old. It is a bittersweet thing to have characters grow in our hearts and on the page only to have to say goodbye. It has been a fun ride to say the very least.
The land of Ev has been alluded to in throughout the series as well as the Novellas. Danielle takes us to Ev for The End of Oz and boy what a place Ev is. Picture the exact opposite of Oz. The people of Ev live in fear of the dangers that lurk outside their doors whether it be the Wheelers, Princess Langwidere or the Gnome King himself. Ev is a bleak place full of danger and death yet I found myself wishing we had more time to spend there. That is a testament to how well Danielle Paige is able to paint a picture with words, when you wish you were in the worst place in the world for a longer period of time.
The central theme of the series has been ‘Dorothy Must Die’. In the beginning, Amy was all for taking out Dorothy after seeing the destruction she has brought upon the innocent people of Oz. It seemed the old Dorothy was lost for good. Amy however, begins to understand that to alter everything Dorothy has done, perhaps there is an alternative to killing Dorothy after all. Perhaps Dorothy still has some good left in her? Hard to believe after everything Dorothy has done but sometimes one person believing is enough
This book is told from the POV of Amy and Dorothy. I found the Dorothy POV particularly interesting. Boy is Dorothy on some kind of ego trip. I found myself laughing several times at just how ridiculous Dorothy sounded. However, it brings to light the fact that while Dorothy is the villain, she believes everything she is doing is correct. A villain often believes what he/she is doing is actually for the benefit of others. They cannot see the truth behind their actions. Yet Dorothy has always had these moments where she sees a different version of herself. Can Dorothy become that innocent farm girl from Kansas and help put an end to all this madness?
The one character I wish we had a little more of was the Gnome King himself. If there ever was a schemer worthy of challenging Dorothy it was the Gnome King. He has plotted for a long time in order to take over Oz. Will his plans come to fruition or will Amy and Nox be able to stop him and save Oz?
This book has two endings and I will give neither of them away. I will just note that I could not picture this series ending in a better way. Let the Road of Yellow Brick take you on this last adventure. Trust me, it’s a good one!
