I forget when I received a copy of this book but it sat around unread for a while unfortunately. However, I was glad I picked it out of my unread pile and finished it in only a couple of days (my editor read it in a single plane ride from NYC to Texas, it is that good!). Then to my delight, I find out that this is the first book of a trilogy rather than a standalone. Personally I enjoy a series more so than a standalone as the author is given more time with which to world build and develop characters as they need be.
All that fun stuff being said, what we have here is a puzzle centered around the main character Tarian who is the “First Born”. I will let you find out what that means and how Tarian’s life evolves through the book from an ordinary cadet at the Entente Military Academy to guarding the fate of the immortals along side the beautiful Immortal Guardian, Audrey Gualtiero, on your own. However, if you are like me and you like piecing things together as you go so that you see the whole picture before it is revealed, then this is a series for you.
The real question is, just how deep do the caverns of this buried secret go? A little perspective here, there are Immortals that live among us. These immortals have been here for centuries, some longer than others. They have been through wars, various governments and have seen the world change time and time again. They are forced to live on with the curse of knowing that those they may fall in love with along the way, the ones they may start a family with, the mortals, will all die at some point in time while they live on with the losses continually piling up.
Here is one twist I will let out of the bag – Immortals can be killed and they are being hunted. Crazy how they can survive wars and a multitude of other deadly accidents yet somehow, someone has found a way to kill them. Needless to say this causes a great concern amongst all Immortals who have formed communities and their own levels of so called “government”. They want this threat eradicated. But can Immortals truly be “killed”? It is a question I was asking myself throughout the book. I mean they are immortal after all are they not? Well I will not give you the answer here. What I will say again is if you like series and puzzles and conspiracies then you will surely enjoy First Born.
