Book two of the Nevernight Chronicles has arrived! At 400+ pages, this is one that I could not put down and managed to breeze through in about 2 days. I will say there is one good thing about having surgery and not being able to bend/lift, it leaves plenty of time to rest and read!
Here we have the chance to welcome back our favorite assassin, Mia Corvere, as she continues on her path of vengeance and blood. This picks up after the events of Nevernight and has a very nice character recap at the beginning in case you did not re-read Nevernight before picking up Godsgrave. (shame on those that did not do this!) Also included at the front of the US edition are maps which show the layout of the world you are about to jump back into. I kept referring back to the maps while reading just to get a clearer picture of where Mia was in the world and how far she had traveled.
The story is written in three parts or three books as described within. In the first you flip between the past and present in each chapter while books two and three stay in the present. With the flipping back and forth in book one the reading was a bit slower for me but honestly it was something I enjoyed. You were able to see not just how the present part of Mia’s plan was going but how she arrived at this point as well.
In keeping with the tone set in Nevernight, Godsgrave does not disappoint in the amount of killing, swearing, sex or sarcastic commentary from Mr. Kindly, the not-cat Mia has had with her since she was a child. Yes this is not something a 9 year old should be reading but I am guessing most of you are just a tad older than 9 anyway or so I hope. While not trying to give too much away I will say this: Nevernight had a lot of M/F sex scenes; Godsgrave has several sex scenes most of which revolve around F/F. If this is something that you are not a fan of well then you probably cannot enjoy Godsgrave sadly as the F/F romance is essential to the story. You will not believe who the second female in this is!!
While Mr. Kindly offers tons of sarcasm throughout, you are also given some in the footnotes included in Godsgrave. Mr. Kristoff pokes fun at the reader for reading the entire footnote at one or two points but it is all in good fun.
There were tons of twists in Godsgrave that keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. One was not hard to spot as it was unfurling but the rest were not easy to see. As the story unfolded I continually wanted more and more. Now as I sit here awaiting my UK copy I really do not want to wait another year or more for the final installment to be released. If you enjoyed Nevernight, you will love Godsgrave. If you have read neither but enjoy the thought of assassins and revenge and plots and puzzles and anything else mentioned above, do yourself a favor and read this series.
