So, you have finally made the jump to dive into the Nevernight series? Congratulations. You are about to find out just how amazing the beginning to this series is! Think I am lying? Go ahead, give it a shot and tell me you do not love this from the get go.
For starters, this got lumped into the “YA” category which I do not quite understand. What is this category anyway? As young adults did we not have television? Were we not able to witness crime and violence and death and murder on a daily basis whether it was on the news or a movie? In times where it is all too common to go less than a day without hearing about another atrocity happening in the world, what really is “YA” anyway?
Lest we get into an entire post about that, let’s stay on topic now. Nevernight introduces us to Mia Corvere, the daughter of a failed revolutionary who has the power to speak with the shadows (a “darkin”) and wants revenge against those who killed her family. What does she do? She hides out, lands on the door of a trainer who happens to be a former assassin, learns the art of killing, speaks with her shadow friend Mr. Kindly and holds the deadliest grudge anyone can ever imagine. She finally takes it upon herself to join a brotherhood of assassin’s known as The Red Church where she can truly shine as she refines her skills in poison, bladework, subtlety, sex and above all else learning the number one rule all assassin’s should know; TRUST NO ONE!!
The writing is not something ordinary but then again neither is this series. Right from the start you know this is not going to be like anything you are used to reading. That is part of what makes this fantastic. It is not just like opening every other book and reading the exact same format. This one takes a little getting used to. Once you get used to the style and the footnotes, well it is pure bliss to watch this story play out.
There is a battle being waged that you truly do not understand until you get into the depths of this book. I am not sure you will truly understand it even when you finish. Are we supposed to? I am not sure. Part of the mystery surrounding this series is just how many unknowns there are left to be revealed. So much groundwork is laid to set this series up for pure perfection. You have a main character who is utterly fantastic in her growth and her sidekick Mr. Kindly a shadow taking the form of a cat with no face but manages to be even more sarcastic than I am in real life and let me tell you that is no small feat. Trust me, try the series. What have you got to lose? You already listened to me ramble on and I am not nearly the wordsmith Mr. Kristoff is.
