Imagine this if you will; Dragons live amongst humanity, but humanity is ignorant to this fact. How could that possibly be you ask? Well these dragons are special. They can “shift” from their dragon form to a human form. That person sitting next to you on the train, at work or in a bar could very well be a dragon. The better majority of dragons belong to an organization called Talon. Talon has evolved over time to become a massive corporation with thoughts of taking over the world.
Never fear, the dragons are being hunted. The Order of St. George once had dragons on the verge of extinction. To this day they do not stop hunting the “demons”. The Order will not be satisfied unless all dragons are killed. To the Order, dragons are soulless creatures incapable of feeling human emotions like love.
Enter Ember and Dante Hill. Ember and Dante are a very rare form of dragon; twins. They have spent their entire lives learning how to be human. As they are sent to a small town in order to learn how to assimilate into human society before taking their places within Talon, loyalties will be tested to Talon and to each other.
This series is told from the POV’s of the four main characters: Ember, Dante, Riley (the rogue dragon called Cobalt) and Garrett Xavier Sebastian (the “perfect soldier” and member of St. George). Julie Kagawa does a fantastic job of giving each of our four main characters a voice. The reader is privy to the inner workings of each mind making you able to love or hate each character as much as possible.
Our main characters are all brought up with one way of thinking being drilled into them. For Garrett, he is convinced Dragons need to be eradicated from the Earth. For Ember, Dante and Riley, Talon has raised each hatchling to put the organization first so that Dragons may one day rule the world. Each character has some soul searching to do in order to figure out what belief system is correct for them. The growth of each of the main characters is amazing. The person/dragon that each starts out as is very different from the person/dragon that they end up. Get ready for a bumpy ride as each character forges his/her own path in life.
