I received an advanced copy of This Cruel Design from a friend and boy did I luck out! I am going to try my best to remain spoiler free. Usually I wait until the end to recommend going to get a book and putting at the top of your TBR pile but no need to wait until the end here. Go out now and pick up a copy. There is so much in this book to enjoy and keep you guessing that you will be thankful you bought a copy well before the end of the story.
The second book in Emily Suvada’s series does not disappoint in the least bit. This is still told from the POV of the main character, Catarina Agatta. Catarina evolved so much in This Mortal Coil that one could expect her character’s arc to be somewhat limited in this second installment. That however, is not the case here. There is so much more to Catarina than one could ever have guessed. The truths she reveals in This Mortal Coil are only the beginning of a much deeper story that evolves throughout This Cruel Design.
We are still blessed with other characters from This Mortal Coil. Cole, Leoban Anna and Dax are all present again in This Cruel Design. As Cat is the main voice of the story, the insight into these character is somewhat limited however each does grow in his/her own way and it is a joy to watch.
The best part about this book was the filling in of the past of each character. The truths and horrors brought forth are unbelievable to a certain extent. To think just how low humanity can stoop is still sometimes a shock to me. These flashbacks are pivotal to understanding more about the non-main characters while also getting a glimpse of the bigger picture Dr. Lachlan Agatta had been planning for.
There are so many twists and turns that I was constantly kept on my toes. I like to try to guess how things are going to play out. I can honestly say that I had no idea that things would turn out like they did. Sometimes I am dead on in predicting how a book will turn out. Sometimes I am about half correct. Here however, I was nowhere close to predicting the result of things in This Cruel Design. That made it all the more enjoyable because I did not know where I was going to end up when all was said and done.
Now two books into the series and I cannot wait for the next installment! I was in a similar state after This Mortal Coil. Upset that I finished the book too quickly but sad that I have to wait awhile before the next book comes out. I am eager to see how the author chooses to end Catarina’s story. I said it in the beginning and I will repeat it now – go grab yourself a copy of This Cruel Design. If you enjoyed This Mortal Coil, this book does not disappoint at all. You can thank me and the author after you read it.
