Generally, when one thinks about eradicating disease and postponing death we view them as things to strive for. Well, in Scythe, the Age of Mortality has passed. Death from disease no longer exists. Death from old age is a thing of the past. Death at random however, well now that still occurs.
Enter, the Scythes. In a world with no cares and no wants, Scythes are given true power. They are the only ones who determine who lives and who dies in this age. Scythes are given a quota to “glean” in a given year. Gleanings are supposed to be random. Gleanings are supposed to be diverse. Gleanings are the one thing that strike fear into the hearts of people.
It is hard not to fall in love with the main characters. From the beginning they are pawns in a game they are too naïve to understand they are playing. Many lessons will be learned for young Citra and Rowen. Each main character starts out with one mentor, but ends with a second and each mentor has their own views on how things should be done. Can Citra and Rowen learn all that is necessary to become a Scythe? If they pass, will they ever be themselves again or will they be what they were molded to become?
This really is something that makes you think the longer you read it. What sounds great in theory, might not be so great in reality. Imagine if for all intents and purposes you would live forever. What would you do with all of that time? Would you learn new languages? Would you learn to play an instrument? Or would you become complacent in life?
In this “perfect world”, an artificial intelligence known as “The Thunderhead” has replaced government. It rules the world more perfectly than any human could. It contains all of the knowledge mankind has gathered in its history. Oh, before I forget, this is no ordinary A.I.. This A.I. is also sentient. That’s right, the Thunderhead can think and it can feel.
However, the Thunderhead cannot intrude on the Scythedom. That is the one area that is out of its control. Do not count the Thunderhead out however. While it abides by the rule not to interfere, that does not mean that this all knowing, sentient being cannot find some gray areas to work in.
Citra and Rowen never wanted to by a Scythe. That makes them perfect candidates. However, can they learn enough to pass the mental and physical tests to become a Scythe? Can they learn to glean with compassion? They better, because only one will become a Scythe and in order to do so, they must kill the one who does not succeed.
Take a read through book one of the Arc of a Scythe series by Neal Shusterman. You will not be disappointed.
