I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of Wildcard by Lisa Maxwell as of one of my BEA 2018 pick-ups.
I feel I was in the minority last year when I did not love Warcross. While I thought the book was good, I was able to figure out who Zero was and mostly knew what would happen at the end well before I got there. For me, that took it down quite a bit. Wildcard on the other hand was utterly amazing! What a difference in my opinion from Warcross. There were so many twists and turns and reveals in this book that I am still trying to figure out just how to feel a week or so after finishing it. Get ready to have your heart pulled in multiple directions.
I am trying not to give away too many spoilers here as I do not want to ruin this for you. This book has your favorite characters back in Emika, Hideo and the Phoenix Riders. You are also introduced much more to Zero which was utterly fantastic. In addition, you are blessed with some other major characters who you will love and hate. I am not going to give away who the new characters are but it is safe to say that no one is who you initially think they are.
This is going to be a bit short because I do not want to ruin this and I am not sure how to fully review it without doing so. I will just say that the ending to Wildcard is fantastic!! I have often said that I feel it is sometimes hard to write a good ending. I imagine it is also difficult to provide enough shock in the big reveals that a reader has to take a step back and say “Whoa”. Wildcard provides both. It gives an ending that I did not see coming. It had enough twists and shock value at each reveal to make me pause for a moment just to soak it all in. Lastly, it has the greatness that only Marie Lu can provide to you. As much as I loved other books this year, this should easily be moved to the top of your TBR list and should be on the top of your pre-order list. There is way too much to love here not to take some time and give this a read.
